3000 Miles to Graceland
Pray to the god of all things holy that you never have to watch this atrocity. I don’t have anything to say about this, except that for Kevin Costner, this should be even more embarassing than “The Postman” or the mailman, or whatever that shitty movie was.
A.I.
Can anyone say “long”? Can anyone say “over-hyped”? This was a fairly good film, but where Kubrik left off, Spielberg led the film astray. That boy is a good actor, as is Jude Law. Beyond that, I wouldn’t watch this again
American Pie 2
Don’t believe any review that tells you this wasn’t as funny as the first. Granted, there’s bound to be a bit of a drop-off, because you go in expecting a lot. But, I thought this one delivered. The main characters were back in full effect and I laughed through most of the movie. My girlfriend didn’t find it quite as amusing, but hey, guys think some things are funnier than girls. Like lesbians. If you were born after 1970, you’ll probably agree that this brings out some good laughs.
Anger Management
It seems like this would be a no-brainer. I like Adam Sandler. I like Jack Nicholson. I like anger. But this was a letdown in a big way. Way overdone. Can’t people just let something be funny? This movie tried to force the funny, which just seems to have the opposite effect for me. When I try to think back to my favorite part, you know what I think? What favorite part? There may have been a few chuckles, but you’ll be laughing more if you keep that $8.50 in your pocket and rent this bomb.
Apocolypse Now
Great film. Great actors. Martin Sheen. Lawrence Fishburn. Dennis Hopper. Marlin Brando. A classic. I’m anxious to rent the newly released version, but I think I’ll wait until I have a DVD player and a large screen tv to watch it on. If you haven’t seen it, what’s wrong with you.
Atlantis
Cartoon, schmartoon. There just aren't enough movies nowadays that have great characters, great plots and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It's too bad that these movies most always are cartoons. In Atlantis, the main character, voiced by Michael J. Fox is likable and his supporting cast is comedic and somewhat fascinating. There's plenty of action and death in the movie to entertain adults. And the storyline, about Atlantis and its inhabitants, could drive an amazing real-life action movie. The only problem would be, real-life special effects couldn't do justice to the imaginative environment and events portrayed in the cartoon. If you like it, you may also want to rent The Iron Giant. In fact, maybe I'll check out some Japanese Animation and see what all the nerds' t-shirts at school were about.
Bandits
I thought this was going to be a terrible film, and if not terrible, simply too corny to enjoy. Boy was I wrong. Billy Bob Thorton was HI-larious. Bruce Willis, not so much. But overall, this movie was surprisingly entertaining and I recommend it.
Best In Show
Yes, it is a movie about a dog show. Yes, it is a fake documentary. And yes, it is worth a rental. The characters are all quality, from the backwoods bloodhound owner to the yuppie brace-toothed couple. Dogs are good. The announcer is better. Some of the shit he says makes me laugh. I just wish I could remember more of it. It may just be me, by I thought Kurt Russell was in this movie, as one of the gay guys. Remind me to check the credits when I get a chance.
Black Hawk Down
Well, there certainly was a lot of killing and action. Overall, I liked it, I just wish I would have known the characters a bit more so I would have cared what was happening to them. It does give you some sense of what the madness of war might be like.
Blade
One of the best opening scenes in monster/action movie history, in my opinion. That rave where it rains blood, and then Blade kills everyone is great. At first I didn’t like this movie, but after watching it 35 times while in England I gained a certain respect for it. It’s certainly worth watching if you’ve never seen it. Stephen Dorf is good, as is Wesley Snipes.
Blade II
It was no Blade I. Without Stephen Dorf it really lost some punch. And that stupid team of vampire hunters? Whistler should be dead, Blade falls in love with a vampire? It did, however have a Mos Def song in it, which you’ve got to respect. The fight scenes were still pretty good. One other problem I had was that if you know the only thing that hurts the vampire mutations is sunlight beams, why even bring guns? Why not just bring a bunch of flashlights? Idiot vampires.
Blow
Blew. While not the worst movie I've ever seen, it was certainly over-hyped. Johnny Depp was best on 21 Jumpstreet. I don't believe him as the character he's supposed to be. Blow wasn't a "fun" movie like I expected it to be. Although the casting of Pee Wee Herman and Bobcat Goldwaith was brilliant. I think those two are staged for big comebacks.
Enemy At The Gates
You can wait to see this one on video. It has some good blood and guts, but has nothing on Saving Private Ryan. The fact that it's a true story helps a little bit, but there's just not enough excitement or development of the characters to make me care. I was just happy to see some killing. It's always amazing to me how in movies about Russians, Germans or even Romans (Gladiator), eveyone seems to speak english. Even better, in Enemy, the Russians not only speak english, but have British accents. REmazing.
Finding Forester
All I can say is find a different movie. Absolutely terrible. Sean Connery is ok, and the kid in it is a good actor, but for the love of god, isn't a movie supposed to be a little bit exciting. The movie half develops relationships between people and brings in half-plots. If you want to sit and be anxious for a movie to end, Finding Forrester is a good choice.
From Here To Eternity
An old black and white film about Pearl Harbor. The box bears that famous picture of a guy and girl making out in a wave on the beach. Much to my girlfriend's shagrin, however, this was no love story. And if it was, it was a love story about man and the military. So far, this is one of the best old movies I've seen. Most important to understand, Frank Sinatra was real cool. Especially in this movie. Throughout the movie things revolve around the army and Frank Sinatra getting hammered. At one point, two soldiers sit in the middle of the road drinking whiskey cause they're too drunk to move. Man, that's good. The movie provided a classic quote when Frank stated, "Isn't it a man's right, or duty even, to go out and get drunk once in awhile?" That is probably not word for word. I reccomend that if your girl tries to get you to rent an old romantic classic, you trick her with this beauty.
Gun Shy
For some reason whenever I walked by this box in Blockbuster, I picked it up. I don't know when it was made, or why no one knew about it, but it was pretty decent. Lliam Neeson (spelled phonetically), Oliver Platt. Sandra Bullock, the cab driver from wings and that guy from Law and Order who's dating Julia Roberts all star in this quirky story about an undercover cop with terrible bowel problems. It moves slow sometimes, but one guy gets a ball shot off and there is a romantic scene in maneur. Can't be all bad, can it?
Happiness
Whoa. The fact that not only did a friend recommend this movie, but he also owns it is a bit disturbing. I’m not sure what to say. There is virtually nothing good about this movie. It makes you feel uncomfortable. It makes you feel a little sick. This is one you’ll want to sit down and watch with your parents. “Dad, would you ever rape me?” “No son, I just jerk off instead.” And that pretty much sums it up.
Joyride
I’m not sure what motivated me to rent this, but I liked it. Steve Zahn is funny to me and Leelee Sobieski is wonderful for never wearing a bra. I think that’s the role she’s made to play. “Needed: young girl w nice breasts who doesn’t wear bra so we can see her nipples all the time.” She’s already been pigeonholed. I’ll pigeonhole her, alright. Anyways, this truly was a suspenseful thriller with great action and a pretty good ending. Much better than I expected, I recommend it for rental.
Kings of Comedy
Ha. That's a laugh. Bernie Mac is one funny man. "I'll kick a kid's ass."
So would I Bernie, so would I.
K-Pax
I like Kevin Spacey. I like to watch him eat a whole banana, peel and all. I liked almost everything about this movie. I’m not sure how I felt about the end. As for me, I believe he was an alien. Want to know why? Talk to me, I’ll tell you.
The Ladies Man
Saturday night live has turned out a ton of terrible movies, but this is not one of them. For a movie I thought I might have to turn off half-way through, I found myself laughing outloud (which often drew strange looks from my girlfriend). Maybe it was only funny to me, but the way the Ladies Man talks and the things he says are pretty damned funny. His speech impediment and references to "boning" and the advice he gives to his listeners are soon to be timeless classics. I'll be renting this one again.
The Lord Of The Rings
Since reading the book, I became quite a fan so I was excited to see the first part of the trilogy. Overall, I was not too disappointed. There were things that I would have liked to see that were left out and some embellishment for the sake of Hollywood, but overall to see the book come to life was impressive. I can’t wait for the next two. Also, anyone who walked out thinking “what kind of ending was that?” Shut up.
The Lord Of The Rings, The Two Towers
Another classic. I can’t wait to buy all these and watch them right in a row. Great battles. Great story. Although some of the dialogue was a bit sappy and the movie took Frodo and Sam on a detour it didn’t need to, it was still good. Gollom is great. And I could watch five hours of ents in battle. I love ents. I wish I was an ent.
